Canadian mezzo-soprano Lucia Cervoni is gaining international recognition for her distinctive vocal color and commanding stage presence. Described by The Globe and Mail as “tall and statuesque, with a voice on the darker side,” Lucia brings impressive depth and versatility to some of opera’s most demanding roles. Her ability to blend vocal power with nuanced artistry continues to make her a sought-after performer.
A graduate of the Manhattan School of Music, Lucia’s studies were supported by prestigious awards, including the Hugh Ross Award and the Anna Case Mackay Grant from Santa Fe Opera. As a member of Seattle Opera’s Young Artists Programme, she was heard as Mrs. Grose in The Turn of the Screw and the title role in Peter Brook’s The Tragedy of Carmen. Lucia won the 2007 Washington International Singing Competition.
Lucia’s recent and upcoming performances highlight her continued ascent. She will soon appear as Die Erste Magd in Elektra with Fondazione Arena di Verona, following her recent success as Suzuki in Madama Butterfly at Dorset Opera Festival. Other notable roles include Penelope in Il ritorno d'Ulisse in patria at Longborough Festival Opera, Carmen with Kitchener Waterloo Symphony, and performances in Dead Man Walking (Den Norske Opera), Peter Grimes (Welsh National Opera), and the title role in Philippe Boesmans’ Julie (Canadian Stage, Toronto). Her European engagements underscore her growing presence on the international stage. At Theater Magdeburg, she performed as Octavian in Der Rosenkavalier, Amastris in Xerxes (Handel Festspiele), and Amneris in Aida. She has also taken on key roles in Die Walküre, The Cunning Little Vixen, and Die Zauberflöte.
In North America, Lucia has performed at Santa Fe Opera as the Third Lady in Die Zauberflöte and as Cornelia in Giulio Cesare at Glimmerglass Opera. She also appeared as Suky Tawdry in The Beggar’s Opera at the Castleton Festival under Lorin Maazel.
Beyond opera, Lucia’s concert repertoire includes Handel’s Messiah, Mozart’s Missa Solemnis, and Verdi’s Requiem with leading orchestras such as the Santa Fe Symphony and Singapore Symphony. She has also performed as a mezzo soloist in Rossini’s Petite Messe Solennelle with Norsk Kammeropera and presented Mahler’s Die Rückert Lieder and Beethoven’s 9th Symphony at various venues. Her 2016 recording of Donna Isabella in Die Braut von Messina showcases her expressive range and dramatic depth.
With an expanding repertoire and a reputation for compelling performances, Lucia Cervoni continues to make her mark on the international opera stage. As she takes on ever more challenging roles, she remains an artist to watch.
